Hatebeak and Caninus, The Band With The Lead Singer of an Animal
Occurrences Hatebeak and Caninus
had become a talking point among metalheads the world because of their lead
singer is an animal. This is something new, strange and unique for us who just
know. Here is a brief explanation of both bands :
Hatebeak
Hatebeak is a death metal band
that was founded in 2003 in Baltimore, United States. The death metal band has
a unique concept that is by entrusting the position of vocalist to a parrot
named Waldo. Waldo is a kind of bird Congo African Grey Parrot which is the pet
of Blake Harrison. Hatebeak consists of three members, namely Blake Harrison as
a beater of drums, Mark Sloan as guitarist and bassist and Waldo "the parrot"
as the lead vocal. Hatebeak already released three albums namely "Beak of
putrefaction" (2004 ), "Bird Seeds of Vengeance" (2005 ), and
"The Thing That Should Not Beak" (2007 ). Overall third album has a
bit of melody and lyrics are hard to understand. This is reasonable because the
vocalist is a bird.
The idea of using a bird to be
the vocalist Hatebeak is the idea of Blake Harrison. Blake Harrison is an
active musician in the scene hardcore-metal Baltimore. Aside from being a
drummer, he is also a sound engineer and business man engaged in metal outfit. Blake
Harrison also joined the band called Pig Destroyer. Back again to the topic earlier,
this idea appears when Blake Harrison watching behavior Waldo is often a sound
that is quite noisy Whenever Blake Harrison play metal songs. These birds will
imitate the sound of the vocalist of the songs played by Blake Harrison. Waldo
is also able to carry out a scream and growl like a death metal vocalist.
Seeing this, Blake Harrison and Mark Sloan immediately took steps to combine
the advantages of the technique Waldo in their music, as well as establishing
Hatebeak and set Waldo as lead singer. Waldo lifted as a vocalist is a symbol
of their statements to give another reference to metal music and considered
that Waldo is not just being a gimmick of a band.
Invites Waldo to record the song is not an easy thing.
They must find the right moment to record sound Waldo. Sometimes Waldo is very
difficult to be invited to the recording and sometimes when Waldo was a good mood
then it will become easier. This makes Hatebeak not plan to perform live.
Hatebeak also don’t want to be perceived exploiting animals and confirms that
this is just a studio project.
In the process of making a song
they recorded beforehand usually sound Waldo. After receiving voice Waldo, they
then went on to write the rhythm with the sound of Waldo. The final and most
difficult part of this process is the writing of the lyrics of the song.
Writing lyrics is done by Blake Harrison with attention to every word that came
out of the mouth of Waldo.
Hatebeak received a good reception
from the metalhead worldwide. Metalhead considers that this is a new
breakthrough in metal music. The thump of loud music collided with the sound of
a parrot with a wrenching scream to make something rare and very unique.
Hatebeak also the only metal band in the world who get sponsorship from organic
birdseed company. Perhaps because one of his band members are birds or their
success in collaborating with the bird in a musical.
In 2009 Hatebeak announced that they had disbanded.
But this year they were reunited and released their latest album in the month
of June. The new album is titled "Number of the Beak" and released
through Reptilian Records.
Caninus
Caninus is grindcore band that was
founded in 2003 in New York, United States. Caninus is a side project created
by Justin Brannan that also the guitarist of the hardcore band named the Most
Precious Blood. He had a crazy idea to form a band with the vocalist is two
dogs. Then Justin Brannan ( lead guitar ) invites Buddy Bronson to fill the
bass position, Rachel Rosen as a drummer and of course their pitbull dog named
Basil and Budgie as a vocalist.
This idea first appeared as
Justin, Buddy, and Rachel are playing along with Basil and Budgie while
listening metal songs from Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death and Terrorizer.
Unexpectedly Basil and Budgie barking like a vocalist to follow the music. From
this incident, they decided to invite both the dog to join the band. Then they
tried to record a song with the vocals of both the dog and then pass it to the
closest friends. Turns out the song received a positive response. Many people
who requested that Caninus to record more songs. Caninus finally decided to
make an album and to finally become one of the band that is very popular with
its uniqueness.
Caninus already produced three
albums, namely "Now the Animals Have a Voice" (2004 ), Caninus/Hatebeak
(2005 ), and Cattle Decapitation/Caninus (2005 ). Caninus/Hatebeak is a split
album together "Hatebeak" titled Bird Seed of Vengeance in 2005. The
character of the music of this band is powerful, fast tempo, full of energy and
complex as grindcore band in general. Just like Hatebeak, Caninus also got
tremendous response from the metalhead worldwide. Caninus purpose of the
establishment is to spread the message that people are more concerned about
abandoned animals and want to nurture. In addition they also bring the message
of animal rights, vegetarianism and veganism. This shows their concern for
animal life by making two dogs as a symbol to convey a positive message through
their dogs barking.
Caninus decided disbanded in 2011
because one of their pittbull dog named Basil died. Basil died from a brain
tumor diagnosed and euthanasia.
Hatebeak and Caninus managed to show us about a new
thing in presenting a musical. And one more important thing is they are able to
train and reward their pet in order to produce something extraordinary.
